Press Release: Knife attack on U.S. citizen in Dresden tram

Knife attack in Dresden tram: Wishing a full recovery to the everyday hero – awaiting investigations, demanding decisive action

The CDU Dresden extends its sincere wishes for a swift and complete recovery to the young U.S. citizen who courageously intervened on a Dresden tram to assist women facing harassment. His intervention stands as a commendable example of everyday heroism, demonstrating the courage and solidarity that we greatly value and respect.

It is profoundly distressing that such bravery was met with a knife attack. This incident once again underscores the importance of ensuring that acts of assistance and civil courage are never discouraged but instead are actively encouraged and protected. The CDU Dresden stands in solidarity with all those who, without regard for their own safety, step forward to defend and support others.

We call for the police investigation to proceed thoroughly and comprehensively, as only the facts will provide the basis for a fair judicial process.

Ingo Flemming, Member of the Saxon State Parliament and Chairman of CDU Dresden, stated:

“Should the suspicions be confirmed, we reaffirm our demand: in the event of an arrest, the immediate review and execution of deportation must take place. Furthermore, we call for the prompt and consistent withdrawal of residence permits in cases of criminal offences, as the CDU at the federal level has long advocated. Zero tolerance for criminality must prevail, accompanied by swift action under the rule of law – particularly in cases involving foreign offenders.”

The positions of CDU Germany regarding public security and the handling of criminal foreign nationals remain clear:

  1. The protection of public security is the highest priority.
  2. Expedited deportation procedures for offenders, including through repatriation agreements with third countries.
  3. Implementation of a five-point plan to secure borders and enforce the return of foreign nationals obliged to leave the country, including border controls, refusals of entry, and detention where departure obligations exist.
